U.K. writer-director Sandra Goldbacher's sophomore feature details the friendship of two London girls from their teens into their 40s, a journey that's typically fraught with as much pathos as humor. As much of the film spans the new wave/punk-besotted '80s, it leans handily on some well-chosen pop tracks from the era, including the Normal's pulsing, electro-macabre "Warm Leatherette," "Just Can't Get Enough" by the original Vince Clarke edition of Depeche Mode, a couple early Clash tracks, "Another Girl, Another World" by the woefully underrated Only Ones, Wreckless Eric's "Whole Wide World," and Scritti Politti's "The Sweetest Girl." But it also underscores a diversity that was easily overlooked in the era, with the arty efforts of the Stranglers ("Skin Deep") and Nick Drake ("Cello Song") helping map out the film's psychic landscape. The remainder spans everything from Sonny & Cher and Tim Buckley to the Super Furry Animals, with Lucy Street's standout pop ballad "White Horses" emphasizing the score's back-to-the-'80s sensibility in winning fashion. --Jerry McCulley

Unlike nearly all of their Brit Invasion brethren, there never was a Them reunion. For at least a couple of good reasons: Lead vocalist Van Morrison's fame as a solo artist quickly transcended the acclaim he earned as a bandleader. Then, too, Them didn't really have a solid, identifiable lineup to reanimate. The ever-in-flux Belfast-based ensemble nevertheless ranks with the Animals and the Rolling Stones as fine purveyors of bullish, non-American '60s rhythm and blues. The Story of Them is the definitive account of the short-lived outfit. Fifty remarkably consistent tracks are spread out over two discs, including R&B standards ("Stormy Monday," "Turn on Your Lovelight," "I Got a Woman") and Morrison originals that laid the groundwork for his early live repertoire ("Gloria," "Mystic Eyes"). Other highlights include a powerhouse version of "Baby Please Don't Go" (with Jimmy Page soloing), fearless takes on Bob Dylan's "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue" (Beck fans will recognize the sample that turns up on Odelay) and Paul Simon's "Richard Cory." Morrison's grown-up work is unassailable, but there's much to be said for what he accomplished as a snot-nosed rocker. --Steven Stolder

Give Shania Twain points for honesty. Up!, her first new release in five years, offers both pop and country versions of the same 19 songs, the red disc boasting pop renditions while the green proffers country. It's a smart idea, since it allows Twain the freedom to dress a song in whatever arrangements and instrumentation she pleases--without setting herself up for criticism as to whether Canada's Queen of the Bare Midriff spat on the Holy Grail of Nashville. Often, the only difference is the substitution of pedal steel, fiddle, and banjo for strings, guitars, and keyboards. In these situations, where she employs the same riffs and melodic strains, the country version usually pales in comparison; however, the green disc wins on those songs where the subject matter hits closer to home, especially the unwed mother tune "I Ain't Goin' Down." Twain was never truly a country singer--she was merely marketed that way--and her red disc particularly pleases, while making no excuses. She is what she is: a perky lounge singer with a calculatedly honeyed voice, a penchant for inane lyrics--often about absolutely nothing--and, in tandem with her husband, Mutt Lange, a masterful command of rhythm, production, and mood. ("I'm Gonna Getcha Good!" is confection perfection.) There's something oddly hypnotic about much of this project, and it may be simply hearing what Shania can do when she abandons the pretense of being a country singer and concentrates on music. Call this a guilty pleasure--pop, country, or somewhere in between. --Alanna Nash
